I know sometimes people think I take improv a tad too seriously, but I don’t care. I’m like how Buddy the Elf is about Christmas, only about improv. It’s magic, dammit, and nothing you do can convince me otherwise. And now I have proof. Well, more proof, because I’ve shown you proof before.
Last night in women’s empowerment class, we were discussing the homework that the students did over the course of the week. The discussion meandered a bit, and one lady asked if she could share something unrelated to the homework, but that the class had helped her with. I’m not bashful about hearing compliments, so I said, “Yes, please.” (I have very good manners.) And she told us all how she had used tools learned in class to help prepare for a job interview. She was calm, confident, able to listen and stay in the moment and felt like – although it’s not the job of her dreams – it was her best interview to date.
Then another woman yes, anded that with her own story about how she realized that she’s in a work situation where she is not valued (and has been for the past 8 years), and this class have given her the courage to start looking for a new position where she can contribute fully to the team and be appreciated.
I would be proud of these students no matter what, but I’m giddy beyond belief because these results happened after only TWO 2-hour classes. Four hours of improv training literally changed these women’s lives. In a good way, I mean.
You can change your life in a good way too!! The Long Beach Improv Collective Women’s EmPOW!erment through Improv Comedy class uses improv skills and exercises to address issues of interest to women – whether at work, in relationships or just in the daily activities of living – and provides specific, concrete ways of using those tools to make positive life changes. The next session begins Jan. 8, 2015. Check out The Long Beach Improv Collective for all the details.
Laugh yourself silly AND be a woman nobody messes with… win/win.
