Long Beach Improv Collective
We believe that improv is something that can help everybody with pretty much everything! From public speaking, to being more confident, working better as part of a team and just having more fun out in the world, improv skills translate directly to real life! Of course, improv for improv’s sake is totally awesome too, and we also love students whose goal is to build their performance skills. But what makes Long Beach Improv Collective unique is that we approach improv form a non-performer’s point of view so that classes are truly accessible to everyone.
Sonnjea Blackwell discovered improv when she was looking for ways to overcome shyness and writer’s block. Improv did the trick: she finished her third novel, then she put down her laptop and focused her creative energies on improv. She has studied at most of the major improv schools/theatres in the Los Angeles area, including UCB, Groundlings and The Second City and was a founding member of Long Beach improv troupe Held2gether. Sonnjea has written for and performed in a number of web series and short films. A graduate of The Second City Directing Program, she has directed sketch shows for Second City Hollywood (most recently Breast Friends) and currently creates, produces and directs improv and sketch comedy shows for Long Beach Improv Collective’s House Ensemble, Your Inappropriate New Friends. She has been a presenter at the Association for Talent Development International Conference and has taught improv classes and workshops to people of all walks of life since 2011.
